Highlights from the Field

Sunrise Educational Center - Early Reading First project

This is what two of our first year Early Reading First teachers have to say about their experience thus far.

“I have really enjoyed being in ERF project this year. The intensive trainings offered through ERF which included videos, class trainings and written resource materials have really helped me understand and implement different ways to enhance my curriculum in all content areas.” “One thing that has been of particular value is seeing how valuable it is to use visual supports in my classroom. They not only allow the children to predict what will happen during the day, they also help them to learn how to monitor their own behavior.”

“ERF has also provided enhancements to my classroom environment. They help set up a classroom library, provided a wide variety of new books, provided computers and educational software, literacy kits and much, much more!”

“The one-on-one coaching has also been a valuable tool to help me evaluate and modify my teaching as I am implementing read-alouds, shared readings and shared writings.”

“One of the most important skills I have gained is how to use formal and informal assessment to plan my curriculum. As an ECEAP teacher, we have several assessments we need to conduct on children and at times it can seem tedious. ERF has made it evident to me that assessment supports curriculum and is very important when I am looking at the children as a whole or individually. Doing a variety of assessments helps me know where each child is so I can plan curriculum that will help them achieve the goals I have established for them."

“I have always been challenged by wanting to teach to much information to the children at one time and in the past this has overwhelmed me and the children. ERF’s Heads-up Reading training on ‘Learning the Code’ Helped me choose very specific strategies to focus on, that when learned, create a strong foundation for reading and writing.”
